Dimmuhvarf
The lakeside site of this residence is on the periphery of Kópavogur, a town adjoining Reykjavík. Magnificent long views extend eastwards across the lake to lava fields and mountains beyond.
The house is entered by descending a ramp. At this lower level the view is obscured and one is sheltered from the often wild weather. Half a flight of stairs lead upwards to the dining and kitchen areas and bedroom wing. This level is orientated about a sunken south-facing garden balanced with glimpses of sky through clearstory apertures. A second half flight leads up to the living area with a window of cinematic proportions framing the lake view. An ante-room at this level serves as a study.
An exposed concrete ceiling oversails the two levels creating an exceptional volume in this otherwise compact dwelling. Other finishes are white plaster and volcanic basalt offset with mahogany and aluminium fittings. Externally the house is clad in corrugated and flat seamed copper. The roof is planted as the found site and will be allowed to return to a wild state.
